Chief Strategy Officer
Jack Abel has been an integral part of The Meltzer Group since joining the company in 1991. In his current role of Chief Strategy Officer, Jack establishes and maintains customer and carrier relationships, while also leading The Meltzer Group’s growing market in Florida.
Beginning in 1999, Jack oversaw the expansion of Meltzer Group Benefits – helping to develop a group Retirement Plan division, and acquiring and integrating four insurance brokerages. With Jack’s leadership, Meltzer Group Benefits grew to become what it is today – one of the largest health and life insurers in the Washington metropolitan area.
Prior to joining The Meltzer Group, Jack served as Vice President of Richmarr Construction Corporation. His experience in the real estate and construction industries has been essential in guiding The Meltzer Group in servicing these sectors.
Jack is actively involved in the community and has served as a board member in several local charities, including Adoptions Together, Hebrew Home of Greater Washington, and the Jewish Community Center.
Jack is a graduate of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He currently resides in Bethesda, Maryland, with his wife, Meryl. They have two children, Alex and Brooke.

In her role as a Senior Retirement Plan Consultant, Kristin Baker provides exceptional service to retirement plan clients. Kristin follows the industry closely, staying on top of news and innovations in order to improve employer retirement plan programs and ultimately making sure her clients’ employees are able to meet their retirement goals.
Kristin has been in the retirement plan industry since 2007. Prior to The Meltzer Group, she served in multiple industry roles covering regulation and compliance, client management, fiduciary oversight, and mutual fund analysis. At AllianceBernstein Investment Management, Kristin worked on the Defined Contribution Investment Only team to analyze mutual funds specifically for retirement plans.
Prior to her time with AllianceBernstein, Kristin’s role as Vice-President, Business Development at National Retirement Partners allowed her the opportunity to work with some of the nation’s top Retirement Plan consultants on industry best practices and client management. Her professional credentials include Series 7 – General Securities Representative and Series 66 – Uniformed Combined State Law licenses, and the Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF) and Professional Plan Consultant (PPC) designations.
Kristin is a Chapman University graduate and currently resides in Arlington, Virginia with her two rescue dogs, Jack and Anna.

Keith Burgess has been in the insurance and financial planning field since 1993. After spending several years with First Union as an insurance investment expert, Keith joined The Meltzer Group to pursue his passion, which is selling life insurance. Since joining The Meltzer Group in 1998, Keith has helped the firm become one of the largest life insurance brokers in the country.
Keith has extensive experience in consulting families, small to medium business owners, and other advisors such as CPAs and estate planning attorneys, on various life insurance options and strategies. He has dedicated his professional career to aiding people in making the appropriate long-term decisions for themselves, their families, their employees, or their clients.
A University of Maryland graduate, Keith was a triple business major and earned a scholarship to wrestle for the Terrapins.

Ryan “Ranan” Butler joined The Meltzer Group in 2010. He currently holds his Life & Health license and FINRA Series 6 – Investment Company Products/Variable Contracts Representative registration. In his role, Ryan’s focus is Business Development on life/health and group benefits in the Meltzer Carroll Tauber Life Division, and on the retirement planning side of Meltzer Retirement Plan Services .
As a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park in 2010, Ryan served in the University Senate as a student senator. Prior to arriving at The Meltzer Group, Ryan began his insurance career with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual).
With a passionate sense of pride in serving the community Ryan has been recognized for his leadership and involvement in various organizations, including: Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, Jewish Federation of Greater Miami, the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, Mount Sinai Hospital, Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, AIPAC and Israel Bonds.
President, Meltzer Carroll Tauber Life
Greg Carroll joined The Meltzer Group in 1984. As one of the longest-tenured employees, he has helped grow The Meltzer Group into one of the top insurance brokers in the Washington metropolitan area.
Greg focuses primarily on the various life product designs, helping to ensure they are able to assist clients in attaining their financial goals. Greg has worked with many of the country’s top estate tax attorneys and CPA firms throughout his career. He has also been actively involved with MassMutual’s actuaries in the design of new products and services.
Greg is an alumnus of the University of Virginia and currently lives in Bethesda, Maryland.
Matt Cassidy has been with The Meltzer Group since 2011. In his role within the Property and Casualty Division, Matt manages client relationships and writes new business.
Matt earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from Lehigh University in 2006 and went on to earn a master’s degree in management science in 2013. While at Lehigh, Matt was a member of the Mountain Hawks wrestling program, winning the 2006 EIWA championship at 197 pounds, and qualifying for the NCAA championship that same season.
Away from work, Matt can most often be found catching up on sleep.

As President of Meltzer Group Benefits, Tom Cogan has been instrumental in building and growing the Large Group benefits division, expanding our capabilities, and enhancing our technology and scope of services. By continuing to improve and advance the division, Tom has enabled Meltzer Group Benefits to maintain a client retention rate of over 98%.
Tom came to The Meltzer Group in 2005 after spending 15 years at Mid Atlantic Medical Services, Inc. (MAMSI), and UnitedHealthcare. While at UnitedHealthcare, Tom was President of their Large Group division and managed a team of more than 40 people responsible for all new and renewing large group business in the Washington metropolitan area.
Born in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, Tom spent most of his childhood in Medford, N.J. After graduating from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business in 1988, he relocated to the D.C. metro area and started working in the health insurance industry with MAMSI in 1990. Tom is married to Jennifer Kitrel and has two children, Kyle Cogan, who is attending James Madison University and Caroline Cogan, who attends Virginia Tech. Tom and his wife enjoy travel, wine, hiking, sports, and spending time with family.

Shamun Cole joined The Meltzer Group in 2004 as an intern, and came on as a full-time employee in the Retirement Plan Division in 2009. In his role as a Transition Manager, Shamun specializes in the intricacies involved with Retirement Plan implementations and conversions. He manages the implementation process to ensure a smooth transition and is well-versed in Retirement Plan designs.
A Saint Augustine’s College alumnus, Shamun holds a FINRA Series 6 – Investment Company Products/Variable Contracts Representative license along with the Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF) designation.
Shamun resides in Gaithersburg, Maryland, with his wife, Amelia, and son, Joshua.

Ray Corneau is The Meltzer Group’s Director of Retirement Plan Consulting, leading a team of seven consultants. Ray’s dedication to service, knowledge of the industry, and two decades of experience add immeasurable value to the company.
A graduate of Rutgers University, Ray spent 14 years at Prudential Retirement prior to joining The Meltzer Group. While at Prudential, he worked in the Operations Unit, before moving into the Relationship Management division, and eventually becoming the Director of Relationship Management.
Ray holds a FINRA Series 6 (Investment Company Products/Variable Contracts Limited Representative) license and Series 63 (Uniform Securities Agent State Law Exam) license, is a qualified 401(k) administrator, and holds his life and health licenses. Along with his wife and two sons, Ray currently resides in Millstone, New Jersey.

As Vice President in the Group Benefits Division since 2008, Julie Baney-Curran has focused on compliance, contract negotiations, strategic planning, and ensuring the overall satisfaction of her client’s relationship with The Meltzer Group.
A graduate of The Pennsylvania State University, Julie moved from Pennsylvania to the Washington metropolitan area in 1994 where she worked for nine years with Mid Atlantic Medical Services, Inc. (MAMSI), holding sales and management positions. Julie then worked with UnitedHealthcare for over two years in Key Account Sales, and The Meltzer Group was her largest partner/client.
Julie is a member of the Northern Virginia Health Underwriter’s Association (NVAHU) and Society for Human Resource Managers (SHRM), where she enjoys networking and staying up to date with new and innovative ideas in the industry.
Julie lives in Reston, Virginia with her husband and she has two stepdaughters. She enjoys entertaining, cooking, gardening, and spending time with her dogs.
John Depenbrock works in the Retirement Investment division of The Meltzer Group. Since beginning his career in the investment management industry in 1983, John has held a variety of sales and management roles. In addition to The Meltzer Group, he has worked for Cigna, Lazard Freres, and Prudential Financial.
A University of Maryland graduate, John holds the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Series 7 (General Securities Representative), Series 65 (Uniform Investment Advisor Law Examination) and Series 63 (Uniform Securities Agent State Law Examination) designations, and holds his life and health licenses. He is also an Investment Advisor Representative.
John is active in the community and has sat on the board of the Ivymount School, the CSAAC Foundation and the Finance Committee of Resurrection Church. He is also a long-time member of the Terrapin Club. John resides in Fulton County, Maryland, with his wife Mary, and they have three children.
Rich DiPippo works with business owners, key executives, and families to help clarify their objectives and take action. Rich believes in a holistic approach to planning and works with many local attorneys, CPAs, and wealth management advisors to guide clients through the planning process.
Hailing from Longmeadow, Massachusetts, Rich is a 1979 graduate of The George Washington University. Following graduation, he served as the Academic Coordinator for GWU athletics and as an assistant baseball and wrestling coach.
Following his time in Foggy Bottom, Rich joined New York Life in 1985 as an agent and became a member of the NYL Chairman’s Council, representing the top 1% of all agents his last 11 years with the company. He was also chosen for the company’s Agents Advisory Council, and served as the Chairman of the Life and Long Term Care Committee. In 1998, Rich formed RCD and Associates, a full-service insurance and planning firm. RCD then merged with The Meltzer Group in 2008.
Rich and his wife Molly reside in Silver Spring, Maryland, along with their daughter Carmen. He is an active supporter of GWU athletics, and also enjoys golf, and coaching his daughter’s basketball and softball teams. Rich has been a member of the Washington Wrestling Officials Association since the early 90s, officiating countless county, regional, and state tournaments throughout Maryland.

Michael C. Down has been a member of The Meltzer Group’s Retirement Plan Division since 2007. His responsibilities range from business development, to client education, to investment direction at the corporate retirement plan level. Michael works with Plan sponsors to establish corporate retirement plans and enhance existing plans based on the changing needs of clients’ employees.
A graduate of Franklin and Marshall College, Michael’s professional credentials include Series 7 – General Securities Representative and Series 66 – Uniformed Combined State Law licenses and the Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF) designation. He is also Life & Health licensed.
Michael currently resides in Edgewater, Maryland.
After serving as President of Dreisen Capital, LLC, Eric Dreisen joined the Meltzer Group in 2006. A University of Maryland graduate, Eric earned his bachelor’s degree in finance, before heading to American University, where he earned an MBA.
Eric and his wife Jenine have two children, Ryder and Dylan. An avid golfer, you can find Eric hitting the links at Woodmont Country Club.

A valuable addition to The Meltzer Group in 2012, Mike Dugan brings more than 16 years of retirement plan experience to the role of Senior Retirement Consultant. Mike partners with Plan sponsor Clients to ensure that Plan Fiduciaries follow industry best practices with regard to the oversight of their retirement benefit programs. As the primary advocate for his clients, Mike is ultimately accountable for the plan’s overall success.
Mike’s career in this industry began in 1997 – throughout which, he held various roles on both the Plan sponsor and Participant Services sides of the business. He spent 11 years with T. Rowe Price Retirement Plan Services in the Baltimore area. He also held leadership positions at Fidelity Investments and SunTrust Bank. Mike’s diverse background gives him a keen understanding of the challenges facing employees as they prepare for life after work. This insight is a unique asset that Mike brings to his role at The Meltzer Group.
Mike has a bachelor of arts in history from Furman University in South Carolina. He currently holds FINRA Series 7 ‐ General Securities Representative license, FINRA Series 6 ‐ Investment Company Products / Variable Contracts Limited Representative license, a FINRA Series 63 – Uniform Securities Agent State Law Exam designation, and the Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF) designation.

Jessica Espinoza, Vice President of Meltzer Retirement Plan Services, has been with the Meltzer Group since 2006. Jessica has worked exclusively in the retirement plan industry for the duration of her career. Beginning in client service as a specialist in plan implementations and conversions, and now working primarily on investment analysis and recommendations, Jessica has extensive knowledge of retirement plan design, compliance, and investment menu construction.
A graduate of the Robert E. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, Jessica holds a FINRA Series 7 – General Securities Representative license, and is a Plan Sponsor Retirement Professional. Most notably, she is a CFA Charterholder. The CFA designation is globally recognized for its comprehensive study program in the field of investment management and research analysis.
Along with her husband, Carlos, and daughter, Isabel, Jessica lives in Potomac, Maryland. She enjoys reading, socializing, and travelling in her free time.
Ethan Foxman serves as The Meltzer Group’s President, a position he was elevated to in January of 2017. Ethan arrived at the company in January of 2014 with 15 years of experience in the healthcare industry, and served as The Meltzer Group’s Chief Operating Officer prior to becoming President.
In his role, Ethan focuses on driving growth both organically and through acquisition, and on coordinating internal operations. Prior to coming to The Meltzer Group, Ethan served as President of Group Dental Service, a Coventry Healthcare, Inc. company which provides ancillary benefits to individuals, commercial clients and government programs nationally.
Ethan received his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and economics from the University of Vermont, and his Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Maryland’s Smith School of Business. He is currently a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization.

As a Senior Vice President with Meltzer Group Benefits, George Givens has provided consulting and account management services for large group benefit plans since joining The Meltzer Group in 2005. He is responsible for supporting clients in the design of their benefit plans, analysis of claims expense and utilization, funding options, and carrier/administrator selection. George works with his team to help maximize the value of the benefit plan to clients and their employees.
George received a bachelor of arts in economics from the University of Delaware, and an MBA in finance from Temple University. He began his career as a financial analyst with NCR Corporation in Dayton, Ohio. It was in Dayton that he helped launch a startup TPA and gained valuable experience in operations and finance. In 1987, George and his family moved to Baltimore, where he joined Group Administration Services as Chief Financial Officer. He worked to effect the acquisition of Group Administration Services by Alta Health Strategies in 1988, and joined Alta as Director of Client Services responsible for the management and retention of existing clients. Alta became First Health and George was promoted to Senior Sales Executive in 1990, responsible for new business development and sales. George joined Group Benefit Services as an Employee Benefit Consultant in 1992. He held several positions of responsibility, including Vice President of Sales and Marketing, before joining CoreSource as Director of Sales in the Baltimore office in 2000. George worked to manage healthcare cost for large groups, including Clark Construction Company and Frederick Memorial Hospital.
George and his wife Patty have three children. He enjoys golf and running.
Dana Guenzel is an indispensable asset to The Meltzer Group. As the Office Manager, Dana is responsible for many aspects of the business including the day-to-day operations of the office, human resources, facilities management, and the coordination of office events.
Prior to joining The Meltzer Group in 1997, Dana spent 13 years at Richmarr Construction Company in Washington, D.C. as the personal accountant for the owners of the firm.
A Pennsylvania native, Dana is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She now resides in Montgomery Village, Maryland with her husband, Grant, and son, Matthew. In her spare time she enjoys being with her family, cooking, and entertaining.
Since 2001, Roland Hawthorne has focused on providing individuals, small business owners, and corporate executives with life, disability, and long term care insurance to solve their personal, business, and retirement planning needs. Roland’s knowledge and experience enable him to provide tax-advantaged solutions to problems faced by individuals due to personal and business circumstances. In addition to the individual market, he markets and sells other services in the areas of employee benefits, retirement plan assets, and commercial lines of insurance.
Previously in his career, Roland was a consultant in the health care industry. He was part of the development team that founded the first publicly traded company, which merged an insurance product and financial product together to provide catastrophic disability coverage and extended lifetime caps for major medical coverage. It was the first product ever endorsed by Christopher Reeve.
Roland was born and raised in Washington, D.C., and completed his college studies at the University of Maryland.
Like The Meltzer Group, Roland is very involved in civic activities and believes in giving back to the community. His participation in the community includes fundraising activities and volunteering his time to organizations like the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, Washington Tennis and Education Foundation, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Junior Achievement, the Greater Washington Urban League, Urban Technology Center, For Love of Children, and Adventure Theatre MTC. In addition, he has served as a member of several committees with the Greater Washington Board of Trade, the DC Chamber of Commerce, and the Associated Builders and Contractors of Metropolitan Washington.
Michael Hoch has been with the firm since 2007 and is currently the head of The Meltzer Group Private Client Services division. In this role, he helps to manage the firm’s clients’ private assets through a wide variety of investment vehicles. Michael has been in the insurance and finance industry for the last 18 years, beginning as a life and health insurance agent with New York Life in 1995.
Michael is a graduate of the University of Maryland. He holds the title of Investor Advisor Representative and has licenses in the state of Maryland for Life Insurance, Health Insurance, and Securities.
Michael currently lives in Gaithersburg, Maryland with his wife of 21 years, Kerry, and their four children. In his limited free time, he enjoys attending his children’s events. He is also an avid runner, swimmer, and biker, and has completed two Ironman competitions.

William (Billy) Karlin has been the President of Meltzer Karlin Property & Casualty since its inception in 2002. Over the last decade, Meltzer Karlin Property & Casualty has grown exponentially, and now serves hundreds of commercial and individual clients. Billy has assembled a seasoned staff of insurance professionals, with over 80 years of combined experience in the property & casualty industry.
Billy began his insurance career with The Meltzer Group in 1990, serving as Senior Vice President of Meltzer Group Benefits, before moving into his current position.
A third generation Washingtonian, Billy is a graduate of the University of Maryland. He lives in Bethesda, Maryland, with his wife, Toni, and two children.
VP Commercial Lines, Senior Account Executive
LeeSé Keith is an experienced Account Executive who fosters exceptionally strong relationships with clients, colleagues,and business partners. Her responsibilities include marketing, advising and servicing medium to large loss sensitive commercial accounts. LeeSé previously worked for Lockton Companies, Marsh USA, and Travelers.
With a career spanning nearly two decades, LeeSé has had the opportunity to work with an array of guaranteed cost and loss sensitive clients from various industry sectors, including manufacturing, aerospace and defense, government contracting, real estate/hospitality, and technology firms.
LeeSé has a bachelor’s degree in risk management and insurance from Georgia State University. She currently lives near Quantico with her 21-year old daughter.

Since joining The Meltzer Group in 2003, Ashley Kelly has held a number of different positions with the firm. She worked in marketing and customer service prior to becoming an Account Manager within the Group Benefits division.
After living and working in Maryland for 10 years, Ashley relocated to North Carolina in order to be closer to family. She has two boys, and enjoys volunteer work and spending time at the beach.

A 20-year veteran of The Meltzer Group, Scott Kirsch works with a diverse client base to develop innovative group benefit programs for businesses throughout the United States. To say that Scott is high energy would be an understatement. His enthusiasm for his work and dedication to his clients is second to none. Scott is highly motivated to provide cost-effective benefit programs, while building relationships and providing excellent service. By understanding the client and the industry, he is able to bring strong ideas and strategies to the table, and has helped grow Meltzer Group Benefits into one of the largest employee benefit brokers in the Washington metropolitan area.
A native of New Jersey, Scott attended George Mason University, where he was an All-American on the wrestling mats, becoming the first student-athlete in school history to achieve this honor. After graduating, Scott earned his master’s degree from Syracuse University, while serving as the wrestling program’s graduate assistant coach.
Scott and his wife Julie have two children, Spencer and Ellis.

In 2006, Leonard Kopp merged his practice with The Meltzer Group. Along with his assistant, Adrienne Ratzkin, Leonard offers sales and service to individual and group clients, specializing in life, disability, and long term care, as well as group medical and ancillary benefits. Although his tenure with The Meltzer Group is relatively short, Leonard has had a personal and business relationship with Alan Meltzer since entering the insurance industry in 1981.
Prior to his current affiliation, Leonard was a partner in the insurance brokerage firm of Akin, Youngentob, DiPietro and Kopp. He came to the Washington metropolitan area from New York in 1971 and enrolled as a law student at Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law. Upon graduation, he formed a partnership with Paul Buxbaum where they engaged in the general practice of law.
Leonard and his wife Helene reside in Brookeville, Maryland. They have three sons, Adam, Matthew, and Andrew.
When not working, Leonard enjoys tennis, travel, and spending time at his home in Ocean View, Delaware. Upon retirement, he hopes to revise his long dormant career as a stand-up comic.
Lisa LaFond is The Meltzer Group’s Controller and has been with the company since 2000. In addition to her financial responsibilities for the firm, Lisa is also the personal bookkeeper for The Meltzer Group’s CEO and his family.
Prior to joining The Meltzer Group, Lisa worked as a bookkeeper with Man and Machine in Landover. She attended Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland.
Born and raised in the Washington, D.C. area, Lisa currently resides in Laurel, Maryland with her boyfriend and three dogs. In her spare time, she enjoys playing softball, swimming, and spending time with family and friends.
A valuable member of The Meltzer Group since 2004, Jon Larranaga brings a competitive background to the company. Jon graduated from nearby George Mason University, after earning a scholarship to play Division I basketball for the Patriots. A first team Academic All-American while at GMU, Jon went on to play professional basketball in Italy, Spain, and France, and was also a member of Ireland’s national team.
Jon is the son of Jim Larranaga, currently the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Miami, and former coach at George Mason, where he took the Patriots to the 2006 Final Four. Jon’s brother, Jay, is currently an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics.
Along with his wife Elyssa, Jon and their two children, Jon Temple and Henry, reside in Washington, D.C.
Vice President, Meltzer Group Benefits
Michael Latessa currently serves as a Vice President within the Group Benefits division. He leads a team that provides world class customer service to clients and partners, which includes consulting on health care reform issues, managing the annual renewal process, shopping lines of coverage, negotiating rates, organizing open enrollment, and quarterbacking any billing, claims, or service issues that may occur during the contract year.
Michael joined The Meltzer Group in 2008 after completing a term of service with the Government of the District of Columbia as a senior public safety official and member of Mayor Anthony Williams’ Cabinet. Michael’s public sector career spanned 30 years of executive and senior level appointments including, Public Safety Director, EMS Chief, EMT, Paramedic, Firefighter, undercover narcotics officer, SWAT team member, and cold case homicide investigator.
A former Division I college wrestler and graduate of the Whittemore School of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire, Michael also earned a master’s degree from the University of South Florida. He currently resides in Rockville, Maryland with his wife of 33 years, LeAnn. They have two adult children, Krista, a high school teacher in Miami, and Bobby, a Harvard graduate working as a financial advisor for Morgan Stanley.

Peggy Lopez has had a long and illustrious career in benefits. Peggy began her career over 22 years ago working for Mid Atlantic Medical Services, Inc. (MAMSI) in the customer service department. She has since held various managerial roles in plan administration, account management, and sales at various companies. Peggy worked an equal amount of time on both the carrier and broker side with a continual focus on customer satisfaction – which made her a perfect fit within The Meltzer Group’s client-centric culture.
Peggy currently manages a select book of premier large and multi-location clients as a Vice President in The Meltzer Group’s Group Benefits Division. Understanding how insurance companies work has given her a great perspective with which to advise and service her clients. Peggy is passionate about helping people and businesses become better educated about their benefits and finding cost-saving solutions. Together with her team, she spends time consulting with businesses that are motivated about health and wellness programs for their employees.
Born and raised in Belgium, Peggy now resides in Gaithersburg, Maryland with her husband and daughter. She also has two adult sons. In her spare time, Peggy is actively trying to master the game of golf.
Executive Vice President of Operations, Meltzer Group Benefits
In her current role of Executive Vice President of Operations, Jaclyn Lorden is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of our Group Benefits Division, which services nearly 2,000 corporate clients. Jaclyn began her insurance career in 1996, and returned to The Meltzer Group in 2001. During her time with the firm, Jaclyn has worn a number of different hats; her experience in account management, service, and marketing have given her a robust understanding of the industry and have been quite beneficial in her current role.
Jaclyn and her husband, Raymond, are the proud parents of their son, Oliver. After Oliver was diagnosed with Autism in 2012, Jaclyn became very involved in the Autism advocacy community. Using her insurance knowledge, she has participated in a number of seminars helping to educate families of children with special needs about their insurance rights. Jaclyn also acts as Maryland’s District Advocacy Chair for Maryland for Autism Speaks. Most recently, Jaclyn was asked to join Anne Arundel County’s Local Interagency Coordinating Council as both a parent advocate and an insurance professional.
Executive Vice President, Meltzer Group Benefits
Katie McLaughlin began her tenure with The Meltzer Group in 2003 after earning a master’s degree in health promotion management from American University. Katie joined the company’s benefits division and rose through the ranks to her current position of Executive Vice President.
Hailing from Schenectady, New York, Katie graduated from Fairfield University in 1999 and soon after relocated to the Washington, D.C. area.
Katie and her husband Pete have two children, Wills and Lane, and reside in Bethesda, Maryland.

Alan Meltzer founded The Meltzer Group in 1982 as a single insurance agent. He has since grown the company to one with over 200 dedicated employees across five divisions. Alan’s strong core values and work ethic were the driving forces behind The Meltzer Group’s exponential growth – and remain today as cornerstones of the company’s ethos.
Alan has earned MassMutual’s highest honor, Agent of the Year, an unprecedented 18 times in his career. He attributes his success to focusing all of his energy on serving his clients. Since 1982, Alan has built The Meltzer Group around his clients’ needs – a decision that has continuously earned him the highest awards and accolades in the industry. He has been named to the Million Dollar Round Table every year since 1978, and Top of the Table every year since 1980, an annual accomplishment that places him in the top 1% of agents nationwide. Alan was inducted into the Washington Business Hall of Fame in 2011, the same year The Gazette newspapers named him one of the “25 CEOs You Need to Know.”
Alan is equally as dedicated to serving his community. As one of the top corporate philanthropists in the Washington metropolitan area, Alan has served on the Board of Directors for numerous organizations, including Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Wolf Trap Foundation, For Love of Children, United Jewish Endowment Fund, Junior Achievement, K. Neal International Trucks, Jewish Federation Executive Committee and the Washington Hospital Center Foundation. As an alumnus of American University, former three-time captain of the wrestling team, and member of Alpha Tau Omega, Alan continues to lend much support today to the AU athletics program and Kogod School of Business. He serves on the Alumni Affairs Committee, Athletics Committee, Audit Committee, and Finance and Investment Committee. In 2006 he was awarded the Cyrus Ansary Medal, which is bestowed upon a member of the American University community who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to public service and philanthropy at AU and to the broader community, as well as for recognized professional accomplishments. The same year, Alan received the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Meritorious Service Award, honoring an individual who has made outstanding contributions in supporting and promoting the sport of amateur wrestling.
Prior to his career in the insurance industry, Alan owned and operated a successful bar and restaurant. If you frequented Washington DC’s Tenley Circle neighborhood in the 1970s, there’s a good chance you spent a memorable evening at Mr. Henry’s. Alan met his wife, Amy, when she walked into Mr. Henry’s one night. He and Amy have been married since 1978 and have four adult children, Jennifer, Elizabeth, Max, and Mark. Interestingly enough, Amy was also the catalyst for Alan’s career in the insurance industry – he joined her working at MassMutual the same year they were married, and founded The Meltzer Group just four years later.
Alan and Amy live in Boca Raton, Florida.
Nicole Mosby joined The Meltzer Group in 2013. In her current role of Account Manager, Nicole manages client benefit renewal implementations with clients and carriers, as well as being involved in compliance, escalated service issues, and contractual changes.
Before arriving at The Meltzer Group, Nicole worked for over 10 years in corporate human resources and benefits. Prior to joining The Meltzer group, Nicole worked at a local government contracting agency where she was responsible for benefit management, communications, employee relations, training, and benefit renewals.
Nicole received a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Virginia Tech University, and earned her Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification in 2008.
Michael Orleans came to The Meltzer Group in 2005, after working for the Washington Financial Group. He has played an integral part in the growth of the company’s retirement, employee benefits, and insurance divisions. Michael has a CLTC (Certification in Long-Term Care) and holds a FINRA Series 6 – Investment Company Products/Variable Contracts Representative license, Series 63 – Uniform Securities Agent State Law license, and Series 65 – NASAA-Investment Advisors Law license, which allows him to act as a Investment Advisor Representative (IAR).
Having a great sense of pride in serving the community, Michael has served on multiple boards in the Washington metropolitan area. In May of 2007, he got involved with CSAAC (Community Services for Autistic Adults and Children), where he served on the Foundation Board from 2008 through 2011.
A third generation Washington D.C. native and graduate of the University of Maryland, Michael resides in Rockville, Maryland with his wife, Linda, and daughter Danielle.
Emily Owen joined The Meltzer Group in 2012, and in her short time with the firm has risen to Account Manager. Emily previously served as Account Coordinator, where she assisted in account maintenance and transfers, formulated Requests for Proposals, handled client communications, and served as a liaison between group and carrier contacts.
Prior to her time at The Meltzer Group, Emily was an intern with The Aspire Group, aiding in the management and growth of their ticket sales database, formulating marketing campaign designs, and acting as a link between Aspire and the Maryland Athletics Ticket Office.
Owen earned her Bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Maryland, also studying abroad in Australia during that time.
President, Meltzer Retirement Plan Services
Since joining The Meltzer Group in 2002, Meltzer Retirement Plan Services has grown from $50 million dollars of assets under advisement to more than $4 billion (as of January, 2013) under Andrew Prevost’s leadership. Andrew has nearly 20 years of experience in retirement plan consulting, management and participant educational services.
Andrew has earned numerous honors throughout his time with The Meltzer Group, receiving the Excellence Award from the Retirement Plan Advisory Group in 2011 and being named one of 20 Rising Stars of Retirement Plan Advisory by Institutional Investor News in 2008. In addition, he has been named one of the top 100 Most Successful Retirement Plan Advisors by PlanSponsor magazine from 2006 through 2013.
A a graduate of Washington College, Andrew lives in Bethesda, Maryland, with his wife Alicia, and their two children, Aranel and Noah.
Senior Administrative Assistant
Brian Jarosinski has been in the financial services business since 2006. As a financial planner he currently works with the Meltzer Retirement Plan Services division, as well as the Private Client Services team. In this role, Brian helps to manage the firm’s retirement clients as well as clients’ personal private assets and comprehensive financial planning through a wide variety of investment/protection vehicles.
Over the years Brian has completed rigorous curriculum to earn his CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ board designation as well as his Chartered Financial Consultant Designation (ChFC). Brian also holds his CASL (Chartered Advisor for Senior Living) designation, which is the leading specialized credential for helping retirees and those facing retirement meet their financial needs. Most recently, Brian passed the curriculum earning him his RICP (Retirement Income Certified Professional) designation. The RICP designation is the newest advanced designation appropriate for helping individuals in the retirement income planning field. Brian also currently holds his series 7 General Securities License, Series 66 Uniform Combined State Law Exam, and Life and Health License. He is also currently an active member of the Financial Planning Association.
Brian is a graduate of the University of Maryland College Park where he was a double major as well as a scholar varsity athlete. He holds the title of Investor Advisor Representative and has licenses in various states for Life Insurance, Health Insurance and Securities.
Brian currently lives in Baltimore, Md. In his limited free time, he is very active in the philanthropic community. He has a long history in the acting community and is also quite active and an enthusiast in various sports and leisure.

Chris Romano has been instrumental in the development of Meltzer Group Benefits as a leading Broker/Consultant in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. He currently leads an experienced team dedicated to meeting (and exceeding) his client’s benefit consulting needs and expectations. Due in part to The Meltzer Group’s enhanced capabilities, technology, and scope of services, Chris and his team are continually able to maintain a client retention rate of 99%.
Prior to joining The Meltzer Group in 1999, Chris began his insurance career in 1997 on the carrier side in the Executive and Broker Sales Division with Oxford Health Plans, a premier Managed Care Company. Chris has used this experience to share his vast knowledge of the health insurance industry from the carrier perspective. His consultative and personal approach enabled him to gain the trust of his clients, peers, and vendors, which he built upon to create lasting and strong relationships.
Chris was born and raised in the D.C. Metro Area and went on to earn a B.B.A. from Loyola College Sellinger School of Business in 1993, and an M.B.A. from Loyola in 1997. Chris holds his Life, Health, Property, Casualty, Variable Life and Variable Annuity licenses as well as his Series 6 – Investment Company Products/Variable Contracts Representative license. He is currently studying for his Series 63 – Uniform Securities Agent State Law license.
Chris spent most of his childhood in Rockville, Maryland – where he now currently lives with his wife Karen and their two sons, Dominic and Dylan.

Vice President, Meltzer Group Benefits
Since beginning his career in 1997, Jack Rushing has provided a variety of employee benefit consulting services to private sector employers. In his current role, Jack focuses on assisting employers in assessing organizational needs, reviewing options to restructure plans or evaluate new plan options, and implementing and administering the recommended strategic options.
Prior to joining the Meltzer Group, Jack worked for UnitedHealthcare, formerly Mid-Atlantic Medical Services, Inc., in their National Accounts division in Rockville, Maryland. He then moved on to become a Vice President for Alliant Insurance Services, a competing employee benefit consulting firm, for seven years.
Jack is a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University with a degree in health policy administration and business. He resides in Rockville with his wife Carol and three children. When there is a moment of free time, Jack enjoys golfing, fly fishing, and mountain or road biking.
Brian Samet joined The Meltzer Group in 2008. In his current role as a Relationship Manager, Brian focuses on Business Development in the Meltzer Carroll Tauber Life Division.
He earned a psychology degree from Old Dominion University in 1997, and prior to arriving at The Meltzer Group, served as Director of Operations at 1st Continental Mortgage.
Born in Virginia Beach, Brian moved to Fairfax when he was nine, but remains a beach boy at heart. He and his wife, Melanie, are the proud parents of four furry “children” – Ferbie and Barney (Pekingese), Shiloh (Pug), and Hank “The Tank” (French Bulldog).
Leah Sangster came to The Meltzer Group in 2013 after graduating from the University of Maryland. She began her career as an Account Coordinator and quickly rose to the role of Account Manager. Leah’s efforts were recognized at the 2016 Meltzer Staff Recognition Banquet when she was honored with the Staff Excellence Award for the entire Group Benefits Division.
Beginning in 2017 Leah has once again risen to the challenge of taking on more responsibilities in her new position of Junior Consultant. In this role, Leah is intimately involved in the strategic planning and negotiations of her clients’ annual renewals, and ensuring those benefit plans are in compliance with federal and state regulations. Leah also thoroughly enjoys hosting open enrollment meetings for her clients to make sure their benefit packages are communicated effectively and entertainingly.
Prior to joining The Meltzer Group, Leah participated in multiple activities and student groups as an undergrad at the University of Maryland, the most notable being Philanthropy Chairwoman for her sorority where her focus was organizing functions and raising funds to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Coupled with this background, the culture of giving and philanthropy at the Meltzer Group is part of what drew her to the company.
Leah lives locally in Bethesda, Maryland and grew up in the area, attending Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. She is a big local sports fan and a strong supporter of the Maryland Terrapins, Washington Redskins, and Washington Nationals. Leah enjoys spending her free time with her friends, her large extended family (her mom is 1 of 10….all girls!), her parents, two brothers, and her wrinkly dog Barkley.
Charlotte Jane Sawyer has been in the insurance field for over 13 years. Prior to joining The Meltzer Group, Charlotte litigated complex insurance coverage issues in Louisiana and throughout the U.S. She also counseled insurance carriers in connection with disputes at the commercial and personal lines level.
Charlotte’s background as an insurance coverage attorney gives her a unique perspective in assisting individuals and businesses to obtain the proper type and amount of insurance coverage to help protect their business and personal assets.
Charlotte graduated from The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee and Tulane University Law School with honors. She currently lives in New Orleans with her husband Jack and their dog Waffles.
Senior Account Manager
Darlene Sebring joined The Meltzer Group and its Group Benefits Division in January of 2008. She is the client contact for policy renewals, coordinating the RFP process, organizing open enrollment, implementing contractual changes, coordinating wellness programs, performing employee surveys and day-to-day problem solving.
Prior to joining The Meltzer Group, Darlene spent 11 years on the carrier side with MAMSI and United Healthcare (UHC), where she worked as an Account Management Supervisor directly responsible for negotiating renewals, recommending and implementing strategic plan deigns, client retention and customer satisfaction. Throughout Darlene’s 18-year healthcare career, she has excelled in customer satisfaction, retention and customer loyalty.
Darlene and her husband Clay have two children, and they reside in Damascus, Maryland.
Vice President, Meltzer Group Benefits Mid-Market
After joining The Meltzer Group as an Account Manager in 1988, Philip Seils was promoted to Vice President of Meltzer Group Benefits in 2008. His core responsibilities are to manage the corporate health and welfare benefits of middle to large market clients. Clients benefit from Phil’s experience in financial management, plan design, compliance, technology, and implementation of the benefit programs. His vast knowledge of claims administration, carrier relations and employee behaviors have allowed his clients to maximize every dollar invested in their benefit program.
A native of Washington D.C. with deep roots in the community, Phil is a graduate of the University of Maryland and an avid fan of the Terrapins sports teams.
Phil and his wife, Julie, have been married for more than 18 years and are the parents of four boys, Joshua, Brett, Jason, and Tyler. Phil can often be found coaching his sons’ teams, sitting on the sidelines of a baseball field or basketball court, or taking music lessons.

Director of Client Services
Frances Singer is the Director of Client Services for Meltzer Private Client Services. In her role, Frances has oversight of new business implementation activities. She is responsible for determining requirements, program management, and issue resolution between parties involved in transactions. Additionally, Frances is also involved in post-sales client maintenance and communication, management of investment changes and account feature implementations, year-end tax season support, information inquiries, and online access enrollment.
Frances was formerly a Senior Product Manager for MCI Telecommunications. Over a 15-year period her responsibilities encompassed the assessment of market opportunities, product definition, people and technical systems development requirements, and field rollout/implementation of telecommunication products addressing the national, midsize and small business segments. She was responsible for $1 billion per year in revenue stream per product, and worked with partners in Canada, Mexico, Europe, and Asia.
A native of Washington, D.C., Frances earned her bachelor’s degree in finance.
Director of Marketing
Stuart Tauber has been practicing since 1992 in the fields of life insurance, employee benefits, and risk management. Stuart has a depth of experience in counseling professionals and business owners on the proper structure of insurance products for succession planning, business buy/sell funding, wealth replacement strategies for estate planning purposes, as well as the full spectrum of executive and welfare benefit programs.
Since graduating from the University of Maryland in 1991, Stuart has continued to further his education. He successfully matriculated in a fellowship program offered by the Life Underwriters Training Counsel, and was selected to teach its Estate and Business Planning class, as an expert in the field. Currently enrolled at the American College, Stuart is on track to complete his Chartered Financial Consultant and Chartered Life Underwriter designations.
Stuart is a qualifying and lifetime member of the Million Dollar Round Table, the top association for financial professionals. He has been awarded The Max Wallach Leadership Award from the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors and the Jerome Dick Leadership Award from The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, where he serves on its Board and Executive Committee. Stuart was recognized by Washingtonian magazine as a “Top Insurance Advisor” in both 2010 and 2012 – an honor shared by the firm’s namesake partner, Alan Meltzer.
Devoted to his wife Karyn and children Ethan, Alana, and Danielle, Stuart and his family live in N. Potomac, Maryland.
Customer Service Representative I
Steve Trumbower began his career in the insurance business 25 years ago as an agent. He gained valuable perspective in his role as a carrier representative prior to joining The Meltzer Group more than seven years ago.
As a Consultant, Steve’s role is to meet clients’ insurance-related needs with general oversight, strategic planning, health care reform inquiries and renewal guidance.
Originally from Western New York, Steve is a graduate of the University of Rochester. He is married and has three sons and four grandchildren. In his spare time, Steve enjoys spending time with his family, playing basketball and traveling.

With more than ten years of experience in Benefit Compliance and Administration, Cara Wedemeyer brings an extensive knowledge of all aspects of Benefit Management to her role as Vice President of the firm’s Group Benefits division. Her expertise in Government Contracting requirements, including the Service Contract Act and the Davis-Bacon Act, are an invaluable asset to the team.
In her day-to-day operations, Cara utilizes her creativity and impeccable organization to drive well-executed strategies for all clients, in an effort to ensure their business goals are achieved. She manages and works with a diverse client base of premier large and multi-location clients.
Prior to joining The Meltzer Group in 2012, Cara served as the Regional Business Development Manager for The Boon Group, a full service Employee Benefits company specializing in the design, implementation, and administration of cost effective fringe benefit plans for local, state, and federal government contractors. Cara has also worked for the Professional Services Council – the most respected industry voice on legislative and regulatory policy issues related to government procurement – serving as its Director of National Sales.
In her spare time, Cara enjoys playing and watching tennis.
Paul Weinberg became an Insurance Broker at The Meltzer Group in 2008. He works with businesses and individuals, assisting them with Employee Benefits, Retirement Services, Life/Disability/Long Term Care Insurance, and Property and Casualty needs. Paul is also a registered representative through NFP Advisor Services.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, Paul graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in international relations. Prior to coming to The Meltzer Group, Paul held a variety of sales management roles with Life Fitness, a subsidiary of The Brunswick Corporation, ultimately becoming East Coast Sales Director.
Paul has a particular passion for life insurance and family income protection. He himself was the beneficiary of a life insurance policy at the age of nine when his father passed away, so he knows firsthand the value of insurance and its tremendous impact on survivors. Paul is very committed to educating his clients with this message.
Along with his wife Carolyn and their four children, Paul lives in Bethesda, Maryland. Among the many activities outside of work that he enjoys are running races, recreational basketball, and coaching a variety of his children’s teams.
Account Executive, Business Development
Thomas (Tommy) Woodward joined The Meltzer Group in 2005 and has more than ten years of financial planning and investment management experience, along with extensive experience in developing investment, tax, insurance, and financial planning strategies for individuals and families.
A Washington, D.C. native, Tommy graduated from the University of Maryland where he earned departmental honors in mathematics and finance. After completing the course work and qualification exams, he moved on to pursue a career in finance.
Tommy lives in Bethesda with his wife Shannon, and their three children. His philanthropic activities include serving on the Alumni Board of Georgetown Preparatory School, being an active member of Catholic Charities, supporting Autism Speaks, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and So Others May Eat (SOME).
Tommy’s interests include CrossFit, the beach, and most importantly, spending time with family and friends.
